Internet Explorer (IE) used to be the top dog of browsers back in the day. It was so much better than what AOL had to offer, and hey, it came pre-installed on every new PC! The little blue “e” was how you got to the Internet. Then slowly, but surely, folks wised up, and other browsers such as Opera, Firefox and Chrome emerged with better interfaces, better features and a lot less freezing. Plus the other guys don’t have nearly as many security holes. IE is like Swiss cheese.
Previously, as a web designer, I was forced to preview my site in multiple browsers just to make sure my sites had cross-browser compatibility. So, I was still seeing IE on the side, as it were. It was the browser most people used and the hardest to please, code wise. When I migrated away from the design world I found myself comfortably living with Mozilla’s FireFox (FF). However, as time went on some of the issues I experienced with IE started happening in FF. Then as my demands for performance and compatibility increased, I switched to Chrome. Chrome and I have been doing great for quite a while, but now IE is knocking on my door with the new IE9. Maybe it’s not me it wants because the advertising seems very hipster-ish. http://youtu.be/4DbgiOCTQts
I started off in DOS. So yeah, a hipster I am not.
I think I’ll wait to go on a date with IE when version 10 comes out. It is said that it is better at supporting the latest web features. I think just for coffee though, nothing serious. We’ll see how much it’s truly changed.
So will Microsoft’s new ad campaign for Internet Explorer get you to give it another try?
