The reason for this is the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that was passed last year. To sum it up in a sentence, GDPR is the largest online privacy protection law ever passed, and it requires companies to ask you before collecting your data.<\/p>\n<p>The law only applies to the European Union, but any company that sells to EU residents must comply as well. Here&#8217;s what must be protected:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Biographical information &#8211;  name, date of birth, Social Security number, phone number, and email address<\/li>\n<li>Web data &#8211; location, IP address, cookie and RFID tags<\/li>\n<li>Workplace data &#8211; education, salary, tax information<\/li>\n<li>Private personal data &#8211;  health, genetics, medical history, racial data, religion, political opinions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Therefore, we have a bunch of companies flooding the Internet with pop-ups like this one asking for consent.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostdime.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Screen-Shot-2019-04-30-at-4.05.02-PM-e1556655997961.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"313\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13352\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, some of these pop-ups may have been for naught. Recently, the <a href=\"https:\/\/autoriteitpersoonsgegevens.nl\/nl\/nieuws\/websites-moeten-toegankelijk-blijven-bij-weigeren-tracking-cookies\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Dutch Data Protection Authority ruled<\/a> that a visitor must be able to continue using a website if refusing the tracking cookies policy. Many websites currently do not offer this functionality. As the DPA puts it, &#8220;permission is not \u2018free\u2019 if someone has no real or free choice.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Enterprises can&#8217;t just put a band-aid on this policy with just one click. Substantial changes to specific processes and technologies may be required. Fines for cookie walls could be coming. <\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<h1>GDPR Stats, One Year In<\/h1>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Speaking of fines, regulators have been lenient so far as everyone gets used to the new policies. The current threat for not complying is a fine of \u20ac20 million or 4% of annual global revenues, whichever is higher. So far, only four fines have been implemented:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>German social media service Knuddels.de suffered a hack resulting in 800,000 email mails and 1.8 million passwords leaked. The Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg Data Protection Authority fined the company \u20ac20,000.<\/li>\n<li>A sports betting cafe in Austria was fined \u20ac5000 for having their outside video surveillance capturing public areas like streets and keeping personal image data for longer than 72 hours.<\/li>\n<li>Portugal&#8217;s Barreiro Hospital was fined \u20ac400,000 because the hospital was unable to \u201censure the confidentiality, integrity, availability and permanent resilience of treatment systems and services.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In January 2019, the biggest fine, a whopping 50 million euros, was laid down to Google by French regulatory agency CNIL for not disclosing how much personal information was gathered from Google Maps, YouTube, and Google Search.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/iapp.org\/media\/pdf\/resource_center\/IAPP-EY-Gov_Report_2018-FINAL.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">recent survey from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP)<\/a>, 56% of respondents say they are far from compliance or will never comply. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostdime.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Screen-Shot-2019-05-02-at-12.53.05-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"598\" height=\"228\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hostdime.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Screen-Shot-2019-05-02-at-12.53.05-PM.png 598w, https:\/\/www.hostdime.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Screen-Shot-2019-05-02-at-12.53.05-PM-300x114.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 598px) 100vw, 598px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The time to comply may be now. According to an <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/sites\/beta-political\/files\/190125_gdpr_infographics_v4.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">official GDPR infographic<\/a>, there&#8217;s at least 255 ongoing investigations of cross boarder GDPR violations. Investigations by a regulatory agency is usually triggered by a website visitor complaint, which have been steadying increasing, as you can see from this snapshot from the same infographic:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hostdime.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Screen-Shot-2019-05-02-at-1.04.25-PM-e1556816840432.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"516\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13359\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Whether GDPR is more strongly enforced or not, this is just the tip of the iceberg in an increasingly privacy-focused world. <\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<h2>HostDime is GDPR Compliant<\/h2>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Data centers store sensitive information and play a crucial role in personal data protection.
