Data centers use a lot of electricity. With more facilities being built across the country, that has led to a fair question: What happens to the power grid when all these data centers come online? There\u2019s more to the equation than how much electricity a facility uses.<\/p>\n

A modern data center can be designed to reduce its demand when the grid is under the most pressure. At HostDime\u2019s new SuperNova data center in Central Florida<\/strong><\/a>, that means working with Duke Energy to disconnect the facility from Duke’s grid and run on our own generators during high-demand events.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how that works.<\/p>\n

\n

Why does electricity demand put pressure on the grid?<\/h2>\n

The amount of electricity people use changes throughout the day and throughout the year.<\/p>\n

Usually, utilities have enough capacity to meet demand. The challenge comes during periods when millions of customers suddenly need more electricity at the same time.<\/p>\n

Florida actually saw this recently. During an unusually cold stretch in February 2026, Duke Energy Florida asked customers to reduce electricity use during the morning hours because heaters were driving unusually high demand across the Southeast. Customers were encouraged to delay things like laundry, dishwashers, and EV charging until later in the day.<\/p>\n

For a homeowner, that might mean waiting a few hours to run the dryer. A large data center can take a much bigger chunk of demand off the grid at once.<\/p>\n

\n

How can a data center reduce demand on the power grid?<\/h2>\n

Let\u2019s use a simple example.<\/p>\n

Say SuperNova is pulling 2 megawatts of power from Duke Energy on a cold morning when electricity demand across the region is unusually high.<\/p>\n

Duke can call on SuperNova through its demand response program.<\/p>\n

When that happens, SuperNova can disconnect from Duke\u2019s grid and move onto its on-site generators. The data center keeps operating, but Duke suddenly has 2 megawatts less demand to serve.<\/p>\n

For a utility trying to keep electricity supply and demand balanced across homes and businesses, removing a large load at the right time can help relieve pressure on the grid.<\/p>\n

\n

What is demand response?<\/h2>\n

This strategy is generally known as demand response.<\/p>\n

Instead of only responding to high electricity demand by producing more power, utilities can also work with customers to temporarily reduce how much power they need from the grid.<\/p>\n

Duke Energy has been developing programs specifically for large commercial and industrial customers that can reduce their load during grid reliability events. Its PowerShare Mandatory 50 program includes data centers among the types of facilities that can participate by using their own backup generation.<\/p>\n

The EPA confirmed in 2025 that Duke\u2019s Mandatory 50 program meets federal requirements allowing qualifying emergency generators to operate for up to 50 hours per year under specific grid-reliability conditions.<\/p>\n

These generators are not simply being turned on whenever electricity demand gets a little high. The program is designed for limited situations when Duke determines grid reliability could be at risk.<\/p>\n

\n

Why does SuperNova have generators in the first place?<\/h2>\n

Because data centers need redundancy.<\/p>\n

Businesses rely on the infrastructure inside SuperNova to stay online even if utility power is interrupted. That means the facility has substantial on-site generation capable of supporting its operations independently from the grid.<\/p>\n

Most of the time, that infrastructure sits ready in case it is needed.<\/p>\n

Through Duke Energy\u2019s demand response program, that backup infrastructure can serve another purpose. During qualifying high-demand events, SuperNova can keep operating while temporarily removing its load from Duke\u2019s grid.<\/p>\n

\n

Data centers are significant power users. That makes how they interact with the grid worth understanding.<\/p>\n

SuperNova was designed to operate independently when necessary, and its planned participation in Duke Energy\u2019s demand response program means it can reduce its grid demand during qualifying high-demand events.<\/p>\n
