This brief tutorial explains how to modify and create files within SSH using the tool Nano. It is incredibly useful for editing existing files and offers a wide range of functionality.<\/p>\n

Opening or creation of files:<\/strong><\/p>\n

nano \/filedirectory\/filename<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Nano is a modeless editor. Once you have opened a file you can type to add text to it. There may be times when you need to turn off line wrap to ensure there are no formatting issues.<\/p>\n

To disable wrapping on long text lines:<\/strong><\/p>\n

nano -w \/filedirectory\/filename<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When you have a file open using nano, there are commands that will assist you in finding, editing, or saving content. Below is a list of commands you can use when editing a file with nano to perform common operations:<\/p>\n

To exit:<\/strong><\/p>\n

CTRL+x<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To save after modification, exit with the above command and enter \u201cy\u201d when prompted.<\/p>\n

To cancel any modification, exit with the above command and enter \u201cn\u201d when prompted.<\/p>\n

If creating a new file, upon running the above command you will also be prompted for a file name. Enter the desired file name to create the file.<\/p>\n

To cut a single line:<\/strong><\/p>\n

CTRL+k<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To paste a line:<\/strong><\/p>\n

CTRL+u<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To search for items:<\/strong><\/p>\n

CTRL+w<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To save without exiting:<\/strong><\/p>\n

CTRL+o<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Justify current selected paragraph:<\/strong><\/p>\n

CTRL+j<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Insert a file into the currently selected one:<\/strong><\/p>\n

CTRL+r<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Move to previous screen:<\/strong><\/p>\n

CTRL+Y<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Move to next screen:<\/strong><\/p>\n

CTRL + V<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Display cursor:<\/strong><\/p>\n

CTRL+C<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Invoke spell checker:<\/strong><\/p>\n
