EA Sports and ESPN Develop New Technology for Football

Competition is definitely the word when it comes to sports. For ages, individuals have awed and marveled at nimble sportspersons taking to a court or field to display their athletic prowess. Competition can also be used to describe the realm of information technology. However, what happens when both technology and sports are combined together?

The folks at EA Sports seem to be keen on answering that particular question. With a global headquarters in California, Electronic Arts Incorporated, commonly known as EA, was founded in 1982. As one of the leading global interactive entertainment software developers, the company knows a thing or two about creating suitable content – especially substance that is sports related.

So, what’s the newest techno fad that EA is cooking up?

Well, it was recently reported that EA Sports and ESPN’s Emerging Technology team have partnered up to create and display a new virtual technology device dubbed GameView. Presented by college football analyst Desmond Howard at Full Sail University, this new form of technology utilizes augmented reality which has been creating quite a stir lately. With GameView, sports analysts and commentators are now given the ability to control and execute football plays by the use of three-dimensional related technology. According to PRWeb, GameView takes place on an amazing 70-inch touch screen built into a tabletop. The football players of your favorite teams are generated by 3D and are able to run whatever play the analyst chooses for them. If that isn’t impressive enough, analysts can also rotate the field for accuracy, zoom in for precision, and telestrate to break down maneuvers.

With this newfound technology, the minds at ESPN said they wish to bring fans and sports enthusiasts deeper into the game in an effort to allow them to understand the choices made by coaches and players. It may just feel as if they are on the field themselves.

Sounds like something out of Epcot, right?

Well, if this new device holds up, some wouldn’t be surprised if Disney did indeed come knocking. Still, inquiring minds want to know how all of this dazzling stuff works. ESPN and EA Sports haven’t exactly gone into detail, but clever nerds and technology experts alike know the basics of 3D and augmented reality. According to Technically Personal, high-quality 3D can be achieved with polarized glasses. However, with GameView, glasses are obviously not needed.

To see three-dimensional objects without glasses is scientifically called autostereoscopy. Insiders have stated that this form of technology isn’t exactly new. In fact, it was invented in 1985. Still, it holds up rather well considering that ESPN is now utilizing it for sports watchers. Perhaps the same can be said about augmented reality which has been around for a while now and has gained in popularity within recent years if reports on Mashable are any inclination.

On hand to test out the new technology for ESPN and EA Sports were a group of eager Full Sail students and faculty. There isn’t any word on when it will make its debut, but it isn’t a coincidence that it was tested just in time for the Super Bowl. With GameView, audiences can gear up for more thrills and action, and that, in turn, will make for an incredible experience.

Touchdown.

  1. Yes, I am very excited about GameView. I think it will give the sports fan a feeling of attending a live game. Thanks Jay this is a very good article.

  2. I think with GameView they have definitely make a touchdown!! As you indicated, it will allow viewers to see and possibly understand why the coach called a particular play. They will be able to see all views of the field. I don’t think it is by chance that GameView is being tested……SuperBowl is in February.

Thanks, Jaylen for always being in the know and helping to keep your readers updated with current technology.

  3. I love the mix of a history lesson with up-to-dat events in the blog posts. You give us a bit of the new and provide needed background to really understand the product or tech. And yeah, GameView is cool but I feel as though this tech has always been around just not used in this light. This is basically a video game with a few extra features–which is fine. People should understand more of how useful video game technolgy can be. It’s not just “mindless” fun. There are real think tanks behind this stuff. I give credit to the EA Sports developers for this tech because without their state of the art designs for video games, this would not exsist as soon as it has. Football is boring to me and the commentary for it, IMO, is even worse. But having this on display to actually show me how a play works is cool.

  4. Wow,I am very excited about GameView. I also like play football. thanks for author sharing this news.
