Google launches new ‘Account Activity’ for Inquisitive Users

It seems to be an accepted fact that the minds at Google are always up to something. Just last week, it was announced that the corporation was designing their own Google tablet, and now it seems they’re trying to offer users more insight into their Google account doings. It was recently announced that Google is launching Account Activity, a new feature that enables users, that sign up, a chance to take stock of what exactly they are doing online.

According to Google’s official blog, Account Activity will send users a link that will send them to a password-protected report with insight into their signed-in use of Google services. As described in an MSNBC report, essentially it’s a monthly report that will indicate just how many emails you may have sent along with your most frequent contacts, where you go and what you’ve been searching for. In addition to this, frequent visitors of YouTube – such as myself – will also receive details on their video views, most popular uploaded videos and where their viewers are located.

All in all, it could be a major eye opener.

It is no secret that the search giant stores information on its users. Now with Account Activity, users will be able to get a glimpse into what exactly Google knows about them. According to TechCrunch, the company says that it’s offering the feature, in part, to protect users from unauthorized activity. Google product manager Andreas Tuerk said the company is striving to keep things simple and intuitive.  He said that it is good for users to know what they are doing.

“Knowing more about your own account activity also can help you take steps to protect your Google Account,” he said. “For example, if you notice sign-ins from countries where you haven’t been or devices you’ve never owned, you can change your password immediately and sign up for the extra level of security provided by 2-step verification.”

Perhaps he has a point. In this day and age, one can get lost in what they are doing online. Perchance it helps to know what is going on. One doesn’t want to be left behind.

And with a search engine as fast as Google, it helps to buckle up.
