We are almost halfway through August, a boring month with no holidays. Or so you thought. For instance, did you know today is Left Handed Day? 10 percent of the population has permission to go wild today and celebrate their southpawness. For the rest of us, here’s 10 other holidays still in August that are worth celebrating.
August 14 & 15 – VJ Day
Victory over Japan (VJ) is celebrated every August 14 and 15. On August 14, 1945, the Japanese government ended World War II by sending America their surrender. The world didn’t find out until August 15th because Twitter wasn’t invented for another 60 years.
August 17 – International Geocaching Day
Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity where people use a GPS receiver or mobile device to hide and seek containers called “geocaches” located anywhere in the world. Almost 100,000 geocachers charged into the wilderness or casually walked down the street to find a geocache during last year’s celebration.
August 18 – Serendipity Day
Serendipity is a happy accident, a pleasant surprise, a fortunate mistake. On August 18th, be sure to seize the day. Do unusual activities you normally would not do. Celebrate being alive and experience the good fortune coming your way.
August 23 – National Hug Your Boss Day
The aim of ‘National Hug Your Boss Day‘ is to help those who may be unhappy and unmotivated in the workplace. NOTE: hugging your boss may result in a raise or termination, so tread lightly.
August 24 – Pluto Demoted Day
Most people remember where they were on August 24, 2006, when they found out the awful news that Pluto would no longer be classified as the ninth planet. Take a minute out of your day to remember this tragedy.
August 25 – Kiss-And-Make-Up Day
You know that friend or family member you are feuding with? Be the bigger person and call a truce. Life’s too short for pointless fights.
August 26 – Women’s Equality Day
Women’s Equality Day is celebrated every August 26th because that was the day women were finally allowed to vote in the United States. For the past 5 years, the day before Women’s Equality Day has been “Go Topless Day” for ladies to grin and bare it.
August 26 – National Dog Day
August 26 is also National Dog Day. I can’t think of a better day to head to your local shelter and adopt a new best friend.
August 30 – National Toasted Marshmallow Day
August 30, which is also yours truly’s birthday, is the perfect day to make s’mores. Some more what?
August 31 – Franchise Appreciation Day
Franchise Appreciation Day falls on the Saturday before Labor Day. Check out the official participants and check in on FourSquare for freebies all day.
