Data centers and cloud services process, store, and transmit protected health information (PHI) under the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). Data center providers must enter into a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) with a HIPAA covered entity.

To obtain Uptime Institute's Tier IV design certification, data centers must pass strict requirements covering mechanical, electrical, structural, and site elements.
